Towing the Line

Boarded windows

He was but a poor islander

with little to impress the world –

owning little more than his words.

A lonely man alone with the stars –

Looking over his shoulder in vain

as there was nothing to see,

save for lost hope and faded dreams

towing in their usual two by two.

All but a few court jesters left –

refusing to let go their assembly line.

Hopes and dreams blinded by regret.

One man not enough to save them.

Boarded up window shutters and weathered red wall.

And Lord knows he tried.

But who was he to question?

For he was but a poor islander

with little to impress the world –

owning little more than his words.

A lonely man alone with the stars.

The people long since gone, leaving

behind once proud homes under a clueless sky.

Windows boarded two by two

against the memories washing ashore.

Old boarded up window

All but a few hundred or so,

refusing to let go their land.

Hopes and dreams growing in the dirt.

And a lone man looking over his shoulder.

Hopes and dreams falling behind.

He couldn’t save them.

Lord knows he tried.

But who was he to question?

He was but a poor islander

with little impress the world –

owning little more than his words.

A lonely man alone with the stars.

    1. Thank you so much, Amy. I realized after I wrote it that I may have poured some of my own loneliness into it with my other half gone since last Wednesday. We haven’t been apart in years, and only twice before since we’ve been together.

      1. Dear God! Brenda! I am SO sorry! I didn’t know and how I wish I could do something for you! I will keep you close to my Heart and keep you in prayer. What you are going through is so hard, heart breaking, and something all of us go through yet dread. May Peace be at your door day and night and may Love guard you while you weep. BIG (((HUGS))) ❤ ❤ ❤

      2. Thank you, Amy. My daughter is with her stepdad as well. She’s driving her own vehicle. My thoughts are with them both as they travel. A hard trip this time of year in this little part of the world. The weather hasn’t been cooperating at all. Fortunately, they’re both great drivers. My thoughts will be with them until they make it home. I’ve been filling the house with music while they’re gone. If all goes well, they’ll be home Wednesday night. 🙂
