Candy Colours

Hurt and alone, she walked

the aging streets of downtown.

She’s been hurtin’ for so long –

her hands worn from the weight.

How do I tell her the truth?

The weight she carries a lie.Β

Our past not worth the dirt

it’s buried under – I’m done.

Her eyes tell me she knows.

Words don’t mean much to her.

The locket around her neck

pointing our way home.

She wants those pretty pictures

painted in candy colour.

I don’t own the green.

All I have is red.

But I’ll make up the rest.

I can’t buy pretty pictures,

so I’ll learn to paint my own.

Each one framed inside our heart.

The locket kept to remind us

we’re more than a pretty face.

We’ll use whatever scrap

we find to build that home.

      1. I’m not really a beer drinker or a sports fan, but go Broncos! πŸ™‚ I have no idea who I’m cheering for, but it feels great lol πŸ™‚ I’m more of a liqueur lover. πŸ™‚ Baileys and coffee go exceptionally well together.:)

  1. My favorite line of this poem is:

    I don’t own the green.
    All I have is red.

So often we wish to look longingly to the ‘grass that seems greener on the other side’ but if we just realize thatbest place to start is doing the best we can with what we have.

    Lovely and thought-provoking as always. ☺ 🌷

    1. That’s such a good point! πŸ™‚ I think most of us are guilty of mistaking the grass as greener on the other at some point in our lives. And then we learn that it’s just a myth. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and share your insight. πŸ™‚ I appreciate it!

    1. Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! At this point, Autumn has come to realize that she alone is responsible for her life. She’s determined to find her way, despite the odds against her. She may not have the money to buy what she wants or needs, but she has the will and courage to fight for it. πŸ™‚
